English Finnish On that day
Monday maanantai maanantaina
Tuesday tiistai tiistaina
Wednesday keskiviikko keskiviikkona
Thursday torstai torstaina
Friday perjantai perjantaina
Saturday lauantai lauantaina
Sunday sunnuntai sunnuntaina

When? — Milloin?

Milloin sinä yleensä menet kauppaan?
When do you usually go to the shop?

Yleensä menen kauppaan lauantaina ja sunnuntaina.
I usually go to the shop on Saturday and Sunday.

  • yleensä — usually
  • kauppaan — to the shop
  • Milloin? asks “When?”; Mikä päivä? asks “What day?”

Yesterday, today, and tomorrow

This example follows the PDF: today is Friday. It is a practice example, not a statement about the current day.

English Finnish Example Translation
The day before yesterday toissapäivänä Toissapäivänä oli keskiviikko. The day before yesterday was Wednesday.
Yesterday eilen Eilen oli torstai. Yesterday was Thursday.
Today tänään Tänään on perjantai. Today is Friday.
Tomorrow huomenna Huomenna on lauantai. Tomorrow is Saturday.
The day after tomorrow ylihuomenna Ylihuomenna on sunnuntai. The day after tomorrow is Sunday.

Oli means “was”; on means “is”. Here, Finnish also uses on for future days; the time word makes the meaning clear.

Weather — Sää

Millainen sää on? — What is the weather like?

English Finnish
The sun is shining. Aurinko paistaa.
It is cloudy. On pilvistä.
It is snowing. Sataa lunta.
It is windy. Tuulee.
It is raining. Sataa vettä.
It is hot. On kuuma.
It is cold. On kylmä.
There is a thunderstorm. On ukkonen.
It is foggy. On sumuista.
It is partly cloudy. On puolipilvistä.
It is warm. On lämmintä.
  • sumu — fog
  • lämmin — warm; lämmintä is the form used in On lämmintä.

Here and there

Täällä aurinko paistaa ja on kylmä.
Here the sun is shining and it is cold.

Millainen sää siellä on?
What is the weather like there?

Täällä on puolipilvistä.
It is partly cloudy here.

  • täällä — here
  • siellä — there

Mistakes to remember

  • Say Aurinko paistaa, not Aurinko on paistaa: paistaa is already the verb.
  • Tuulee and sataa also work without on.
  • Write pilvistä, kylmä, and täällä, keeping the Finnish letters.
  • Toissapäivänä is written as one word.
  • Loppuu is a verb meaning “ends / finishes”; loppu is the noun “end”.

Practice

  1. Say all seven weekdays, then their “on that day” forms.
  2. Answer Milloin sinä yleensä menet kauppaan? using your own schedule.
  3. Say what day it was yesterday and what day it will be tomorrow.
  4. Describe today’s weather using two expressions from the table.
